Today is International Women's Day. It is a global day celebrating the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women. The day also marks a call to action in regards to gender equality.
While it is accurate that history reflects a very male-dominated patriarchal society, the Bible undeniably speaks of the incredible value and role of virtuous women and gives us several examples of strong and courageous women.
Proverbs 31 describes the virtuous woman as faithful, trustworthy, loyal, an able provider, a hard worker, wise in financial transactions, generous to those who serve her. She is strong, prudent, entrepreneurial, charitable and courageous. She brings honor to her household and is cherished by her family.
5 Daughters of Zelophehad - These girls, Mahlah, Noah, Hoglah, Milcah and Tirzah stood fearless and firm and as a result reformed the culture of their day. Because they spoke up, they reversed precedent and claimed possession of their father's inheritance which appears to previously have only been transferable to sons, allowing the family name of their father to continue.
Deborah the Prophetess - A judge and governor of Israel, responsible for directing military conquests as well.
Jael - A contemporary of Deborah, dealt the death blow to Sisera, the commander of the armies that were against Israel.
Queen Esther of Persia - Her courage and wisdom saved her people from annihilation
Mary of Nazareth - Modeled an attitude of faith, obedience and trust, even at the expense of certain criticism and social rejection.
Mary Magdalene - From a woman possessed with demons to a transformed disciple of Christ. Some of the Messiah's greatest friends and closest disciples were great women of faith.
Lois & Eunice: Grandmother and mother of Timothy - We don't know much, if anything about Timothy's father. It's possible he died at an early age. We do know that the women in his life are credited with modeling true faith and teaching Timothy the ways of God from the Scriptures.
Phebe of Corinth - She is called a servant or minister to the church at Cenchrea; a woman set over others; a female guardian, protectress, patroness, caring for the affairs of others and aiding them with her resources. She was likely a significant financial backer in the ministry of the apostle Paul.
Throughout the Scriptures we find examples of strong women of faith, courage, wisdom, endurance, purity and humility. May their testimony be an example and a guide for generations to come.
